“I feel proud when I sign in the company at the entry and exit. Earlier I could not get any job as I was illiterate and have no knowledge of words and numbers. But learning in WLC has enabled me to read and write Hindi and Arithmetic. Thank you for making me self confident.” – Rajni, a 32 year old beneficiary.

Like Rajni, there are thousands of women who are devoid of basic education, awareness and lead a life with lots of problems. The ‘Women Literacy Programme’ is conceived with an energetic and vibrant strategy  that focuses on women educatio for 22 Lac illiterate females present in Delhi through  Women Literacy Centers coupled with raising awareness  of, and concern for the safety , health, environment and community services. The objective of this program is to not only improve the standard of living of their families but also of their communities.

Our education programs are based on the principle that literacy for these women can occur when they are placed in a place of their comfort zones and into a state of consonance. We, therefore, identify an educated women in the target area and appoint her as the center instructor for the center to enroll 30 illiterate women of the concerned area. Her jhuggi/home serves as the Shikhsha Kendra for the beneficiaries. The instructor and the coordinator regularly provide motivation and counseling to these women. They are taught basic Hindi, Arithmetic and a Vocation through Computer Based Functional Literacy Software (CBFL) which has been developed by Tata Consultancy Services. The stationery, story books, an old donated computer to run the CBFL program, a blackboard and newspaper are also provided for them free of cost to facilitate their education.

To create awareness about safety, health, hygiene and environment issues, Cleanliness Campaigns are also organized by the center in-charges and coordinators which motivates the whole community to maintain their personal hygiene as well as environmental  hygiene. After cleaning the streets and picking up garbage for proper disposal, the teams organized the awareness rally about community cleanliness. The awareness rallies are conducted on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.

The centers are also celebrates different festivals to enhance amity among the WLC team and beneficiaries. Community members of different caste and religion always come together to celebrate varied festivals like Diwali, Eid and Christmas, and which eventually promotes a harmonious community feeling.

The project of Women Literacy has seen overwhelming response and has been successful in achieving its objective. The beneficiaries of our center have learnt to manage financial issues, read newspapers, hoardings, report cards of their children and gained confidence and self-respect. Today some of our beneficiaries have become center instructors, coordinators, ABHA and are employed back in WLEP.
